The Valley is a portfolio by Keith Haring and the writer William S. Burroughs. The portfolio consists of 31 magazines, of which 16 etchings which Keith Haring drew in his studio in New York in April 1989 with the text of William S. Burroughs. Burroughs wrote his texts by hand for 16 text sheets that were printed in red ink. The last page of the portfolio contains both text and image. The Valley lyrics are a chapter from the 1987 novel The Western Lands, by William S. Burroughs. This story, about people living in a crack, don’t know where they came from or where they went, is both absurd as recognizable. This was the last collaboration of Keith Haring and William S. Burroughs, as Keith Haring died of AIDS a few months later in February 1990.
